VIII General Policies

Time Limitations

  • Graduate credit for coursework more than 7 years old at the time of the final examination cannot be used for a master’s degree.
  • The time limit for a doctoral degree is 10 years.
  • Following the final lecture recital, doctoral candidates have 1 year to complete an approved disquisition.
  • The Graduate School may impose additional requirements if these timelines are not met.

TOEFL Requirement

  • Minimum TOEFL score: 525 (paper-based) or 71 (Internet-based)
  • Minimum IELTS score: 6

Academic Honesty

The Challey School of Music values and enforces academic integrity.

  • Faculty and GAs are responsible for:

    • Providing clear guidelines on cheating and plagiarism at the start of each course.
    • Using precautionary measures where cheating is likely to occur.
  • Students are responsible for:

    • Submitting their own work.
    • Understanding that cooperating on exams or assignments without authorization constitutes a violation, even if one student is not enrolled in the course.

Rights and Procedures:

  • Students must be informed if suspected of a violation and given the opportunity to respond.
  • Faculty have the prerogative to impose penalties, which may include:
    • Failure for an assignment, test, or the course.
    • Additional sanctions proportional to the severity of the violation.
  • Students may not drop the course in which a violation occurred without instructor permission.
  • Faculty must provide a written report of actions to the:
    • Department Chair
    • Dean
    • Graduate Dean
    • Provost

Previous Enrollment in MUSC 748 (Music Bibliography and Research Methods)

  • Students who previously completed MUSC 748 or a comparable course may be entitled to a waiver or audit status.
  • For students who completed MUSC 748 in a recent NDSU master’s degree, the requirement is waived at the discretion of the advisor and instructor.
  • For students who completed a similar course at another university:
    • Evidence (such as scholarly papers or other documentation) must be presented to the MUSC 748 instructor for consideration of a waiver or audit status.
