5 Advising

Advising

Students are assigned an advisor from the voice-choral faculty at the start of their academic career at NDSU. The advisor serves as the student’s primary contact for academic guidance. However, students are ultimately responsible for their own academic progress and success.

Advisor Responsibilities

The advisor will:

  • Assist the student with class registration each semester.
  • Provide guidance in progressing through their degree program.
  • Help the student develop career goals and post-graduation plans.
  • Work with the student to create strategies for academic success.
  • Help students balance commitments and avoid overextending themselves.
  • Monitor the student’s credit load, including ensemble participation, work/school balance, and grades.
  • Assist with degree-related paperwork, including:
    • School of Education entrance forms
    • Final Degree Audit (see below)
    • Course Substitution/Waiver forms (as needed)
    • Recital forms and program information

Students are encouraged to schedule appointments with their advisor at any time during the semester. Advisors are also available via email.
Self-advising is not recommended.

Final Degree Audit

The final degree audit is a review of all academic requirements necessary for graduation. It lists completed and remaining degree components and helps students plan for timely completion.

  • NDSU’s Office of Registration and Records issues only one official degree audit per student.
  • Students should request their audit no earlier than their junior year in the Challey School of Music.
  • Students should speak with their advisor before requesting a degree audit to ensure readiness.
